Dr. Angel is an Endocrinologist with research interests in adipose tissue and lipid/lipoprotein metabolism. His work led to the discovery that in obesity, the total body cholesterol pool is enlarged because of the accumulation of cholesterol in fat tissue. He was Prof and Head, Dept of Internal Medicine, University of Manitoba and Head of Medicine at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.  Prior to that, he served as Director of the Institute of Medical Science and Director of the Clinical Sciences Division at the University of Toronto.  He was founding member of a number of academic and advocacy organizations and in that role established Friends of CIHR (2000), a national organization that promotes the goals and ideals of CIHR and under its auspices founded the Friesen International Prize in Health Research (2005) and the Video History of Medicine in Canada Project [www.fcihr.ca and Twitter: @friendsofcihr].  He has had a lifelong interest in health research promotion and guiding young scholars in academic careers.
