Camille Mageau

International Joint Commission

C.  Mageau is the Secretary of the Canadian Section of the International Joint Commission (IJC), an independent, Treaty-based organization which provides scientific advice to Canada and the United States on the use and quality of shared boundary waters.    She is an oceanographer and marine geophysicist with considerable field and government experience in both Canada and the United States.

Prior to joining the IJC, she directed interdisciplinary teams of scientists and policy makers with the department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.  During her tenure with this department, she gave effect to Canada’s commitment to wise oceans management though the formulation of a   government-wide Oceans Management Strategy, drafting of enacting legislation, and implementation of marine conservation, spatial planning and management programs.  As the oceans are a commons, this domestic work naturally interfaced with tri-national and multinational efforts to share, integrate and translate scientific knowledge into government policies, international programs, Agreements and Conventions needed to address national, regional and global problems.

Working with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and as a Canadian visiting scientist with both the U.S National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and with the Environmental Protection Agency, she provided decision makers at all levels, with the scientific understanding needed to apply an integrated, ecosystem approach to transboundary environmental issues.
