Christopher Herd is a professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta, and the current Director of the University’s Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology (ISSET), a multi-disciplinary, virtual institute spanning six departments in faculties of Science and Engineering. He is an expert in the geologic evolution of planetary bodies in the Solar System, as inferred from studies of meteorites, and is responsible for the Alberta Meteorite Collection, the largest University-based collection in Canada, now housed in a state-of-the-art Curation Facility. Dr. Herd has lent his expertise to a number of committees and working groups relating to sample return from asteroids, comets and Mars. As Director of ISSET, he is responsible for upholding the mandate of the Institute, including to seek novel, inter-disciplinary space research opportunities and to offer unique educational experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.
