Director, School of the Environment Professor,
Dr. Anthony Charles is Director of the School of the Environment, and a professor in the Sobey School of Business, at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada. His research focuses on linking environment and economy, particularly emerging green economies and community conservation initiatives. He covers such fields as community-based resource management, climate impacts and adaptation, fishery and marine management, sustainability of coastal and marine systems, and the human dimensions of ecosystem-based management. Dr. Charles has authored and co-edited several books, including Sustainable Fishery Systems; Integrated Fish Farming; Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation and the new Governing the Coastal Commons. He leads the Community Conservation Research Network (www.CommunityConservation.Net), a 7-year global initiative that focuses on local-level conservation, sustainable community economies and supportive governmental policy. Dr. Charles is a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation, a Gulf of Maine Visionary Award winner, and a member of the Fisheries Expert Group in IUCN’s Commission on Ecosystem Management. He has served as an advisor to the United Nations (FAO), the OECD, the World Trade Organization, the Canadian and Nova Scotian governments, and many communities in Atlantic Canada.
