Paula Brand

Environment Canada
Director of Sustainable Development Policy
I am a proud Agro from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in Soil Science.  After several years of professional experience, I received a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Guelph.   I have spent over 25 years working in the public service mostly for the federal government in two departments – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Environment Canada.   From my Prairie roots, literally saving soil in southern Saskatchewan to experiencing the world forum of sustainable development at Rio+20, I have had a wide range of experiences but always with the common goal of conserving our valuable resources. I am currently the Director of Sustainable Development Policy at Environment Canada where I am responsible for coordinating the development of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy.  As a result I get to work in collaboration with 41 federal departments as we put together a cohesive, whole-of-government view of our actions to support environmental sustainability.  While this presents a lot of challenges, in terms of creating consensus amongst many competing priorities, it also it quite exciting to demonstrate to Canadians the breadth of activities being undertaken to support environmental sustainability in Canada.
